Mark Gomes and Rick Miller created Faster Than Forty to provide practical training and dietary research for runners and other high-performance athletes. It doubles as a repository of news on Gomes’ Masters running career (hence the name), but athletes of all ages should benefit from the tools, data, and research. About Mark Gomes (co-founder)

Mark Gomes ran track and cross country at Northeastern University. An indoor specialist, Gomes captured the New England 1,000-meter title as a freshman and later established a school record in the event, clocking 2:24. He finished his collegiate career with three North Atlantic Conference 1,000-meter titles and an All-IC4A selection and PRs of 1:52 at 800 meters and 3:53 at 1,500 meters. In 2011, Gomes won the silver medal at the U.S. Indoor Masters National Championships.

Gomes graduated from NU with honors, earning finance and management degrees. In 2004, he founded Pipeline Data LLC, an independent consultancy providing stock market research to some of America ‘s largest financial institutions. He continues to serve as the company’s President & CEO. In his free time, he donates his expertise to individual investors as a contributor to SeekingAlpha.com.

About Rick Miller (co-founder)

Rick Miller ran track and cross country for Northeastern University. He has posted personal bests of 1:55 for 800 meters, 3:55 for 1,500 meters, and 1:12:48 for the half marathon. (He also once jumped 6’2″ in the high jump, but no one believes him.) Miller continued to run competitively for several years after college and coached high school track.

Miller graduated magna cum laude from NU with a degree in journalism. He covered entertainment events and track and field for several newspapers before becoming a market analyst. He is a trained researcher with experience building complex data models, and he has edited or co-authored a number of books spanning the literary fiction, satire, and professional development genres. He now works in advertising.

About Michael Atwood (social media editor)Coach Mike Atwood

Michael J. Atwood ran track and cross country for Boston College. As a freshman, he qualified for the U.S. National Junior Championships by running 8:28 for 3,000 meters, and he went on to run PRs of 14:47 for 5,000 meters and 24:50 for 5 miles. He earned All-New England honors in the 1,000 meters and steeplechase. Atwood has qualified for two Boston Marathons and ran recent bests of 1:21:57 for a half marathon and 3:07 marathon at age 39.

Atwood is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Master of Professional Writing program and published the short story collection, HiStory of Santa Monica with Aqueous Books in 2010. He has coached track for several Massachusetts high schools, and in 2010-2011 he lead Foxboro High School to a State Class C Massachusetts State Championship and was awarded “Coach of the Year” by The Boston Globe.
