Rabbit Ears 5:26.11

Because we’re not just about the Weekly Retro, Rabbit Ears is your new-music audio dump specifically suited to get you pumped (and keep you pumped) during those long, tough workouts. This week, University of Michigan’s Zach Ornelas follows up on his a$$-kicking “Start List” from last week with his “Summer List,” five tracks he finds perfect to run to on these nice summer days. Enjoy…

Matt and Kim:  Daylight – Grand

An incredibly catchy chorus and the ability to put a smile on your face regardless of how your day is going… Perfect for that sunny and 70-degree run. Key line: “In the daylight I don’t pick up the phone, cuz in the daylight everywhere feels like home.”

Japandroids:  Young Hearts Spark Fire – Post-Nothing

Japandroids’ noise-pop focuses on upbeat rocking tracks such as this one.  Key line: “I don’t wanna worry about dying, I just wanna worry about sunshine girls.”

Los Campesinos!:  You! Me! Dancing! – Hold On Now, Youngster…

This Welsh group contains an impressive (until you think of the royalty split) eight members turning out upbeat indie-pop. Key line: “It’s you, it’s me, and there’s dancing!”

The Drums:  Let’s Go Surfing – The Drums

Maybe you’ve been dying to try a barefoot trot along the shore.  Pop this in and go for it! (Just don’t get your iPod wet…) Key line: “Honey, take a run down to the beach.”

Zac Brown Band:  Toes – The Foundation (Deluxe Version)

I’m from Texas, y’all… I couldn’t make a summer music list without at least one country jam.  This is the perfect summer running country song. Key line: “Not a worry in the world, a cold PBR on the way, life is good today, life is good today.”

Zach Ornelas ran a 9:14 steeplechase in the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Although he loves running and living in Michigan for school, he can’t wait to get back to Texas where it’s always sunny! Agree or disagree with his song choices? Drop him a note in the comments or through the Contact page.

I loved this list, especially “Let’s Go Surfing” and “Toes.” I don’t run, BUT I was dancing, listening to them. Will definitely listen to more from The Drums and Zac Brown Band. Thanks and have fun running this summer.
