The iRun / New Balance Mile – Race Recap

February 7th, 2012 in NO RUNNING by 0 Comments

It was an unseasonably warm and humid night in Miami. But that didn’t stop over 100 competitors and spectators from coming out for the iRun / New Balance Mile.

If you live in Miami and love road racing, be sure to put this on your calendar (the next one will be coming in the spring). Several things set the iRun / New Balance Mile apart from any other road race you will ever run. For starters, registration is free — try finding that in this day and age.

Several other idiosyncrasies make this race unique. It takes place on Monday night through a dimly lit Miami neighborhood. There are no quarter-mile markers, no splits, and no bell lap. To top it off, it’s up to you to log your finishing time on a white board.

Purists might be turned off by these characteristics, but don’t be fooled. The iRun / New Balance Mile delivers a unique race-you-around-the-block feel that most runners haven’t experienced since…well, since they started calling themselves “runners”.

This year’s race was won by Elliot Mason. Mason also won the inaugural event last August. He ran a flawless race. Resisting the urge to follow the leaders’ blistering pace, Mason did his damage in the second half. Pulled along by the competition, he gradually worked his way into the lead and cruised to 4-second victory. In the process, he bettered his own course record (4:27).

Daniel Martin finished second, edging out Australian New Balance legend, Andrew Letherby. Krishen Rangi and Mark Gomes rounded out the top five.

On the women’s side, Sadie Wells defended her title. She clocked a 5:24, just a second shy of her own course record. Lora Sidorovich came in second among the ladies. A newcomer to the mile, Sidorovich debuted with an impressive 5:48. Geishel Valverde rounded out the top three.

Overall, the race was a big success. iRun Miami put on a heck of a show and created a rare race experience.
